Healthy food and nutrition

At Thornaby Children's Nursery we aim to provide the right quantity and quality needed by the body to ensure the children are given every opportunity to thrive. All children who attend the nursery will be catered for regardless of their dietary requirements. This could be because of race, culture, religion, parental preference or medical reasons.  The alternative offered will be as similar to the main menu as possible.

We have spent a considerable amount of time experimenting to find out which healthy food the children prefer.

As a result, for some years we have produced a well balanced, healthy and varied diet to encourage the children to establish healthy eating habits, which includes food from the four main food groups (carbohydrates, dairy, protein, fruit and vegetables) and based on the provision of fresh food as opposed to processed food.  Wherever possible fresh vegetables will be used from reputable suppliers and our Nursery garden. Food with harmful additives, colours and preservatives will be avoided.  We do not add salt to any of our meals and use only the minimum amount of sugar required.  Beef has not been served at the Nursery for a number of years and genetically modified foods are avoided where ever possible.

The nursery meals are prepared and cooked on site by a suitably qualified and experienced member of staff who has a knowledge and understanding of nutrition, hygiene and also menu planning.
